Dr. Dabber® Boost e-Rig

Here’s a new-fangled portable, electronic contraption for “dabbing” concentrated versions of the devil’s vine without the need for a torch.

Type: Portable, electric dab rig

Dr. Dabber®

When Product Entered the Market: 2015

Forms of Cannabis Unit Accepts: Concentrates such as wax, rosin and shatter

Retail Price: As of 8/2016, the latest model is $149.95 on the manufacturer’s website.

NOTE ON PRICING: This unit is being sold online by various third parties at the same or lower price points than the manufacturers. If you are considering buying from a third party, make sure that seller is an authorized seller or the warranty won’t apply. Also make sure the unit is the most recent version. Often times these sellers pass off the previous model as the latest model.

Warranty: From the Manufacturer’s website – “We offer a 'No Questions Asked' 1 year warranty on all our products. The warranty on the Boost covers the battery, charger and all electrical components for one year. Glass is not covered under warranty”.

What’s Included:

Body (without stand) L: 4.5in/11.4cm   Diameter: 1in/2.5cm
Glass Percolator     L: 4.5in/11.4cm   Diameter: 1in/2.5cm

Body of the unit feels solid and has some weight to it. The main body appears to be made of stainless steel with a ceramic heating core and some possible aluminum components. There are two blue rubber gaskets to seal the glass piece to the unit. All of the magnet pieces hold well. The nails are somewhat delicate and very small. The glass is relatively thick at around 3mm or so, but it’s not Pyrex® and can break if dropped or mishandled. The glass is definitely Chinese and of average quality.

Battery & Charging
The battery is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which can be removed by unscrewing the body of the unit. Charging via a wall outlet is much quicker than by USB port.

Temperature Settings
There are two temperature options, though both basically heat the nail you’re using to approximately 600F/315C in about one minute.

Performance & Vapor Quality: The Boost performed efficiently. All nail types heated up in less than one minute. Keep in mind, this is a low-temp dabbing unit. What that translates to are tasty dabs. The Boost produces decent clouds of vapor with flavorful results. However, the glass percolator attachment is a little perplexing; it's almost impossible to remove all the water for cleaning. The design has two openings for the water to drain, but they are placed in a way that defies the flow of water so that some liquid inevitably gets trapped. You'll see exactly what I mean when you use it. The instructions tell you to blow through it to expel all the water, but that does not do the trick 100%. As a result, the glass is hard to clean and dry thoroughly.

Reliability & Durability: After only 6 dabs, on a fully charged battery , the unit stopped working with a blinking light code. According to the manual, it indicated a "connection problem". I called Dr. Dabber and they sent me a new unit immediately. Their customer service was very prompt.

After using the replacement unit, once again, after about 8-10 dabs on a fully charged battery, the unit stopped working and it started blinking the same "connection problem" code.  I've seen others online complain about this exact same issue.

Ultimately, based on my two consecutive experiences, it's clear that at least for me, this Boost model was unreliable.

  • From a cold start, allow the unit to cycle through one time as a pre-heat
  • At $14 for a replacement, it's quite possible that the titanium nail is not made in the US nor from medical grade 2 titanium. I could not validate this on the mfgr website.
  • The ceramic nail works very well
  • Take care when installing the nails; they are delicate.
  • When attaching the glass piece, hold it by the bottom loop piece that goes over the gaskets; do not hold the tube
  • Draw steady but gentler than you would with a conventional rig
  • Consider buying an extra battery and reserve it as a fully-charged back-up
  • Never fill the glass attachment with water while it’s on the unit; fill separately and then attach it
  • Caution! If you overfill the glass attachment, water might spill onto the heating element when you use the rig
  • Consider using the glass attachment without water. No messing around with the H20.
  • Soak glass, nail(s) and dabber tool & cap in alcohol to clean

Maintenance: The Boost e-Rig is easy to maintain. There are only a few parts that need to be regularly cleaned: The glass attachment, dabber tool and nail. Here’s a Dr. Dabber video all about cleaning the Boost.

The Pros:
Surprisingly efficient in heating up

Efficient use of product; very little extract is needed
Excellent at producing tasty, low-temp dabs
No butane torch required
Heats up fast
Removable battery
Long battery life on a single charge

No Questions Asked Warranty

The Cons:
Reliability was poor
Glass attachment  is difficult to clean & virtually impossible to empty

The nails are delicate
Base should have a larger diameter to ensure the unit does not easily tip over
No wall outlet adapter included for the USB cord

: May be difficult to use for those with limited dexterity due to the very small size of the nails.

Rating: 2/5

Love the overall design, portability, and ease-of-use without any torch. The Boost also produced tasty dabs. You do get a lot at this affordable price point. However, the shortcomings included poor glass percolator design and the need for a more robust nail design. The nails' design makes the quartz ones especially prone to breakage. As with my experience, other consumers online have described the same "connection problem" product failure after a short time of use.  That said, Dr. Dabber's customer service was excellent and very promptly sent me a replacement product. Unfortunately, the same problem occurred with the replacement unit after just a handful of uses. Due to this unreliability issue with two models, I can't give this product a satisfactory rating based on my experiences.

9/6/16 UPDATE: According to the manufacturer, they have identified the electrical problems and are developing the next iteration of the Boost, which will resolve these reliability issues.

And remember, the next time you turn around, turn around again ...'cause I’ll be there.
