Louis VIII: Lunch with Mom

product packaging. A four inch clear plastic pill bottle with a black twist off cap and Revolution's orange and yellow label.

Your Illinois Cannabis Authority

product photo. An elevated shot of a piece of parchment paper with a coca-cola colored glob of extract that resembles a half-melted piece of hard candy, swimming in a pool of liquid mess.

Case: Louis VIII (extract)

File Date: 05/08/2017

Case No: 0111

Last Saturday afternoon I get a theft call at a nearby convenience store. I arrive on the scene and a woman tells me she went in to pay for her gas and came back to discover that her purse had been stolen from her front seat. The woman went on to say that a few minutes before we arrived she called her bank to report her credit card had been stolen and was notified that it was just used at a McDonald's located only 50 yards from the gas station. She told us she saw a green mini-van leaving the scene as she exited the store.

I arrived at the McDonald's parking lot where I found the perp’s green van, along with a middle-aged woman and her two children eating inside of it. The mother’s receipt matched the stolen credit card.

Although the label identifies this extract as “pull and snap”, it could not have been more the opposite. This stuff was a glob of extract that I would describe as a half-melted piece of hard candy, swimming in a pool of liquid mess. I’ve had snap-and-pull form, and this was not it at all.

IMPORTANT: It appears that this product may have 'sugared up'. According to my research, " 'nucleation' (i.e., sugar up) is what happens when lipids left in a sample of shatter begin to separate from the cannabinoids they homogenized with during the extraction process. . The trichomes are just looking to revert back to their natural state. This happens for several reasons and cannot be attributed to a single causation." Hence, the solid-to-sticky metamorphosis. See this article for a detailed explanation.

Terpene Profile:
Alpha-Bisabolol 0.0588%; Borneol 0.0178%; Camphene 0.0358%; Beta-Caryophyllene 0.5594%; Fenchone 0.0219%; Fenchyl Alcohol 0.1016%; Alpha-Humulene 0.2066%; Limonene 0.7448%; Linalool 0.2621%; Beta-Myrcene 0.8535%; Nerolidol 0.0216%; Alpha-Pinene 0.1206%; Beta-Pinene 0.2120% Terpineol 0.1651%; Terpinolene 0.0146% (LK Pure Labs)

In its intact state, this sample smelled of lightly of a musk-like pungency. When dabbed, it tasted of pungent pinesol-like flavors. Unusually harsh. Not pleasant at all on my palate. Louis VIII is known for its harsh terps, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. This stuff was also very temperature sensitive; it flamed up easily at lower than normal temps. Again, not exactly an inviting product. I want to point out that this terpene profile is very wide-ranging.

The terpene levels listed above are for the Louis VIII flower and NOT for this extract. I'm providing this information to show the terpenes for the strain used to make this extract.

To learn all about terpenes, see the Terpenes Library page.

The effects were a classic, powerful, Indica body stone. The high had lots of staying power and a creeper element, too.

Duration of Effects:
2-3 hours, depending on dose

May Help With:
Helped with mood and sleep. May also help with body pain, muscle pain and spasms, nerve pain, anxiety, stress, panic, PTSD, appetite, nausea (and more).

Rating: 2/5
This seemed to have sugared up and had very harsh terpenes. The powerful effects are beneficial but the trade-off with this extract is not worth it. Louis VIII is a great medical strain to seek out, but just not in this specific iteration.
